How It Works

We begin with you.

Through a series of relaxed, in-depth conversations, I'll get to know you, your experiences and the people and events that have shaped your life.

We'll talk about the obvious milestones, but we'll also look for the smaller moments – the conversations, relationships, decisions and memories that bring a life story alive on the page.

From there, I'll develop the structure of your book and begin writing.

You'll be involved throughout the process, reading chapters as they're completed and giving me your thoughts, corrections and additional memories.

This isn't about me writing my version of your life.

It's about creating a book that sounds and feels like you.

What's Included?

Your Story Planning Session

We'll begin with an extended consultation to explore your story, why you want to write it and what you'd like your finished book to achieve.

Together, we'll identify the heart of your story and decide what the book should – and shouldn't – include.

In-Depth Personal Interviews

Your memories are the raw material for your book.

We'll arrange a series of one-to-one video conversations in which I'll interview you about your life and experiences.

You don't need to prepare speeches or remember everything in chronological order. My job is to ask the questions that help uncover the stories, details and memories we need.

Your Book Structure

Before writing begins in earnest, I'll create a proposed structure for your memoir.

We'll look at where the story should begin, the major themes and turning points, and how the chapters could fit together.

You'll have the opportunity to discuss and approve the direction before we move forward.

Professional Memoir Writing

Then I'll begin turning our conversations into your manuscript.

I'll write your story in a natural, engaging style while working carefully to preserve your personality and voice.

The aim isn't for readers to think:

"Someone wrote this for them."

It's for them to think:

"I can hear this person telling me their story."

Chapter Reviews

As the manuscript develops, you'll have opportunities to read and review the work.

You can correct facts, add memories, clarify events and tell me when something doesn't quite sound like you.

This is a partnership throughout.

Editing & Final Manuscript

Once the complete first draft has been written, I'll revise and polish the manuscript, incorporating your feedback and making sure the story works as a whole.

At the end of the process, you'll receive your completed, professionally written manuscript ready for the next stage.

How Long Will My Book Be?

Every life story is different.

Most memoirs I work on will fall somewhere around 40,000–50,000 words, but your book may be shorter or longer depending on the story you want to tell.

We'll discuss the appropriate length before we begin.

How Long Does It Take?

Writing someone's life story properly takes time.

A typical memoir project will take approximately six to nine months, depending on the length of the book, interview schedule and how quickly we're able to review chapters together.

I don't believe in rushing someone's life into a book.

The final price will depend on the length and complexity of your story, the amount of research required and the number of interviews involved.

You'll always receive a clear quotation before committing to the project.

Payment plans are available, allowing the cost to be spread across the different stages of writing your book.

If you've completed my Memoir Writing Consultation and decide within 30 days that you'd like to continue with the full Memoir Writing Partnership, I'll deduct your entire £150 / CAD $250 consultation fee from the cost of your package.

What Isn't Included?

The Memoir Writing Partnership covers the development and writing of your manuscript.

Unless specifically included in your individual quotation, it does not include:

• Printing costs
• Book cover design
• Professional typesetting
• ISBN purchase
• Advertising or marketing
• Publishing or distribution fees

However, I can guide you through what happens next, including the different options for turning your finished manuscript into a published book.
